ABOUT
Matias is a Chilean-Australian filmmaker who grew up in Western Sydney with a passion for visual storytelling and bringing the stories of his upbringing and heritage to the wider world.
Matias works across documentary, film, music videos and commercials. Both as a Director and Editor, narrative is at the core of every decision Matias makes, implementing cinematic styles and vision appropriate for each particular story.
In 2013, Matias was awarded a scholarship to study an Advanced Diploma in Screen and Media at the International Film School in Sydney with a focus on Directing, Screenwriting and Producing.
Matias was one of eight screenwriters selected for the Behind Closed Doors initiative run by Co-Curious in 2018, and was nominated for an AWGIE for his screenwriting on anthology feature film Here Out West which opened the Sydney Film Festival in 2021, released in Cinemas Australia-Wide in February 2022 and was nominated for Best Film at the 2022 AACTA Awards.
In 2022 Matias Co-Created, Co-Directed and edited the ABC series 8 Nights Out West, a documentary food series hosted by Arka Das exploring the culinary hubs of Western Sydney.
In 2020 Matias edited the feature documentary film Wash My Soul in the River’s Flow about iconic singer/songwriters Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter which Premiered at Sydney Film Festival in 2021.
In 2023 Matias edited the feature documentary This Is Going To Be Big, which premiered at Melbourne International Film Festival in 2023 and won the audience choice award.
Matias’ short documentary Campesinos about Patagonian Gauchos was selected for 11 International film festivals and was also selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick in 2020. Matias is now working on a feature-length version titled ‘Los Puesteros.’
Matias also has been engaged in a number of different production roles with significant experience in post-production working as an assistant editor on films such as The Dry , Nude Tuesday and Palm Beach.
