ABOUT

Matias Bolla is a Chilean-Australian filmmaker from Western Sydney whose passion for visual storytelling is deeply rooted in his upbringing and cultural heritage. Working across documentary, drama, music videos, and commercials, he brings a narrative-driven approach to his work as both a director and editor.

In 2013, Matias was awarded a scholarship to study an Advanced Diploma in Screen and Media at the International Film School Sydney, where he specialised in directing, screenwriting, and producing.

In 2018, he was selected as one of eight screenwriters for the Behind Closed Doors initiative run by Co-Curious. His work on the anthology feature Here Out West earned him an AWGIE nomination for screenwriting. The film opened the Sydney Film Festival in 2021, received a nationwide theatrical release in 2022, and was nominated for Best Film at the 2022 AACTA Awards.

As an editor, Matias has worked on a number of acclaimed Australian documentaries, including Wash My Soul in the River’s Flow (Sydney Film Festival 2021), This Is Going To Be Big (MIFF Audience Award 2023, ASE Best Editing in a Documentary Feature 2024), and Whistle (TIFF 2025). In 2022, he co-created, co-directed, and edited the ABC documentary food series 8 Nights Out West, hosted by Arka Das and exploring the culinary communities of Western Sydney.

His short documentary Campesinos, which explores the lives of Patagonian gauchos, screened at 11 international film festivals and was selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick in 2020. He is currently developing the film into a feature-length documentary titled The Weight of Snow.

Matias has also been engaged in a number of different production roles with significant experience in post-production working as an assistant editor on films such as The Dry , Nude Tuesday and Palm Beach.
